Thinking About an E-Bike? You Still Need Motorcycle Insurance

There's a growing trend towards energy efficient and even electric bikes. Some have small engines. Others have a bit of a larger engine. Many feature customizations. And, a variety of manufacturers are producing numerous models of these bikes.

An e-bike may not seem like an important investment to cover with insurance. However, it can be. Motorcycle insurance may be necessary for larger, more powerful e-bikes, in fact.

What Are E-bikes?
An e-bike is a type of electric bike. It may operate using a battery rather than a gas-fueled motor. Some manufacturers are now creating powerful batteries that provide a sizable amount of speed and force. Regardless of your bike's power, you should have insurance. However, if you have a more powerful bike, your need for coverage increases.

Realize the Value of Coverage
Some companies will offer motorcycle insurance for these bikes. Others have specific e-bike coverage. In all cases, these policies can provide a number of key benefits to you, the property owner.

  • Some e-bikes are quite expensive. Low-level options start at $1,000. However, some more expensive models can cost $12,000 or more. You will want to protect this value. Your bike insurance components will do that.
  • There are risks here. You operate on the roadways with cars. Depending on the size of the bike, you may be driving on high-speed roads. As a result, you need collision insurance. It protects your bike if you collide with something.
  • You can strike another person. Hitting someone with an e-bike can cause a significant amount of damage. Be sure you have liability insurance. It helps pay for the damage you cause to others.

Does your homeowners insurance cover your e-bike? It may. Renters insurance may, too. However, this is rarely the case for larger e-bikes. Like with most larger bikes, motorcycle insurance can offer more appropriate protection. Do not assume your home insurance or renters insurance will offer any coverage. Verify any limitations on such bikes with your insurer first.

An e-bike can be a great way to get around. They are better for the environment, too. As these bikes get larger and more powerful, you will need better insurance coverage for them. Work with your insurance provider to get the best insurance for your e-bike. Then, ride without having to worry about an accident occurring.

Do you need bike insurance? Call Amco Auto Insurance and we can help you get a fast, free policy quote.
