Thinking of Selling Your Car Before Moving?

So you’ve decided to move to another state? There are a lot of big decisions ahead of you, one of which involves whether you should keep your car or sell your car. Either way, you’ve got some planning to do. Let’s look at some of the things involved with both choices.

Selling Your Car
The first step is deciding if you want to sell your car to a dealership or to an individual. Selling to a dealership is an easy, quick method, but, being a business seeking a profit turnaround, a dealership may not pay you as much as an individual. Do some research using tools like Kelley Blue Book and online forums to get an idea of how much you want to sell your car for, bearing in mind that a person will likely try to negotiate with you.

You’ll need to either take your car to a dealership or advertise it to private buyers using Craig’s List and/or other sources. Be prepared to hand over your car’s records and answer questions about its history. Once it’s sold, you’re free to buy a new car or opt to use public transportation in your new location, depending on where you move. An urban city like Manhattan makes it easy to forgo a car, while a more sprawling area like the DFW metroplex makes a car nearly essential.

Keeping Your Car
If you choose to keep your car, the biggest decision you’ll have to make is how to get it to your new location. If the car is in good repair, it may be easiest and cheapest to simply drive it over. However, if your car is older and/or has a lot of miles on it, you may opt to tow or ship it to prevent further wear and tear. Note that these methods are more expensive and shipping may take a few days more than it takes for you to get to your new home.

Before making this decision, you should research how much owning a car will cost in your new city. Parking at your home and place of work may cost more than you’re currently paying, which may make public transportation a better option.

Your car needs coverage, no matter how long you own it. Call Amco Insurance today for more information on auto insurance.
